Arthritis
Wrist and hand arthritis refers to inflammation or degeneration of the small joints in the wrist, fingers, or base of the thumb. This condition affects daily tasks such as writing, gripping, or lifting, and leads to pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of hand function.
The most commonly affected areas include the wrist joint, the base of the thumb (CMC joint), and the small finger joints (PIP and DIP joints). Arthritis here can be due to wear-and-tear, autoimmune conditions, or previous injuries.
Common Causes of Wrist & Hand Arthritis:
- Age-related cartilage degeneration (osteoarthritis)
- Autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis
- Previous fractures or joint injuries
- Repetitive hand or wrist movements
- Genetic predisposition
- Post-traumatic arthritis
- Gout or other metabolic conditions
Symptoms of Wrist & Hand Arthritis:
- Persistent pain in the wrist, fingers, or thumb base
- Swelling and tenderness in the joints
- Morning stiffness or reduced flexibility
- Clicking, grinding, or locking sensation in the joints
- Decreased grip strength
- Difficulty with fine motor tasks like buttoning or writing
Do’s for Managing Wrist & Hand Arthritis
- Perform hand and wrist mobility and strengthening exercises
- Use ergonomic tools or adaptive devices to reduce joint strain
- Wear prescribed splints or braces to support the joints
- Apply warm compresses or paraffin wax dips for stiffness
- Take prescribed anti-inflammatory or disease-modifying medications
Don’ts for Wrist & Hand Arthritis
- Avoid repetitive, forceful gripping or pinching motions
- Don’t ignore early signs like pain, swelling, or morning stiffness
- Avoid prolonged use of the hand without breaks
- Don’t self-medicate without professional guidance
- Avoid smoking, as it worsens joint health and healing
