Elbow Arthritis

Elbow arthritis refers to inflammation or degeneration of the elbow joint, most commonly caused by osteoarthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, or rheumatoid arthritis. This condition affects the articulation between the humerus, radius, and ulna bones, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility of the elbow. Degeneration involving the radius and ulna—the two forearm bones—is often secondary to elbow joint arthritis or past injuries, and may contribute to loss of forearm rotation and reduced grip strength.

Causes of Elbow Arthritis:

  • Age-related cartilage wear (osteoarthritis)
  • Previous elbow fractures or dislocations
  • Repetitive overuse (manual labor, sports activities)
  • Rheumatoid or inflammatory arthritis
  • Joint instability or ligament damage
  • Untreated joint infections

Symptoms of Elbow Arthritis:

  • Persistent elbow pain, especially during movement
  • Stiffness and limited range of motion
  • Locking, grinding, or clicking sensation
  • Swelling or tenderness around the elbow
  • Difficulty lifting, gripping, or rotating the forearm
  • Weakness in the arm or hand

Do’s for Managing Elbow Arthritis

  • Perform prescribed stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Use joint protection techniques in daily activities
  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce joint stress
  • Apply ice packs during flare-ups for pain relief
  • Follow up regularly with your orthopedic specialist

Don’ts for Elbow Arthritis

  • Avoid repetitive heavy lifting or arm overuse
  • Don’t ignore persistent pain or stiffness
  • Avoid self-medication—only use prescribed treatments
  • Don’t skip physiotherapy or rehabilitation sessions
  • Avoid smoking, as it can impair joint health and healing
