Joint Replacement

Ankle and foot joint replacement is an advanced orthopedic procedure designed to relieve chronic pain, restore mobility, and improve quality of life in patients suffering from severe arthritis, joint degeneration, or post-traumatic joint damage that hasn’t responded to conservative treatments. Also known as ankle arthroplasty or foot joint arthroplasty, this surgery involves replacing the damaged joint surfaces with artificial implants, allowing smoother, pain-free movement.

What Is Ankle or Foot Joint Replacement?

  • Joint replacement surgery for the ankle or foot involves:
    • Removing the worn-out or damaged cartilage and bone from the affected joint
    • Inserting a prosthetic implant (usually made of metal and plastic)
    • Restoring natural joint movement while maintaining proper alignment and stability
  • This is most commonly performed on:
    • The ankle joint (between tibia and talus)
    • The big toe joint (first metatarsophalangeal joint)
    • Midfoot or subtalar joints, in selected cases

When Is Joint Replacement Recommended?

  • Advanced osteoarthritis of the ankle or foot joints
  • Post-traumatic arthritis after fractures or injuries
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory joint diseases
  • Failed previous treatments like injections, medications, or fusion
  • Severe pain and stiffness affecting walking and daily activities

Surgical Procedure Overview:

  • Pre-surgical planning with X-rays and/or CT scans
  • Surgery under spinal or general anesthesia
  • Damaged joint surfaces are removed
  • Artificial components are implanted and aligned
  • Incisions are closed and a protective cast or boot is applied
  • Postoperative rehab and physiotherapy begins after healing starts

Benefits of Joint Replacement in Ankle & Foot:

  • Long-term pain relief
  • Improved mobility and joint function
  • Preserves more natural movement than joint fusion
  • Enables return to low-impact activities like walking or cycling
  • Enhances overall quality of life

Do’s After Surgery

  • Follow your doctor’s instructions on rest and weight-bearing
  • Use assistive devices (walker or crutches) as advised
  • Keep the foot elevated and apply ice to reduce swelling
  • Start gentle physiotherapy when permitted
  • Maintain good hygiene and care of the surgical site

Don’ts After Surgery

  • Don’t bear full weight on the joint too early
  • Avoid soaking or wetting the dressing until cleared
  • Don’t skip follow-up appointments
  • Avoid running, jumping, or high-impact sports
  • Don’t ignore signs of infection (redness, fever, pus)
